TV reporter Lydia Cumming fired for making flood victims carry her over puddles during live broadcast

The reporter was sent to Puebla in centra Mexico to give a report on extreme flooding, where she met the two helpful residents.

Lydia Cumming, 24, said they offered to carry her to the home of an old woman badly affected by the natural disaster and she accepted.

Cumming said: "I try to maintain a good relationship with people and I was afraid I would sound rude if I tued down the favour. They carried me for two seconds and after I asked them to put me down.”

It was already too late, however, and her employer Aztec TV was not amused by the incident and accused her of lacking professionalism.

Another joualist at the scene took a picture of the incident and posted it it online, where it was almost immediately picked up by another inteet user.

He tweeted it with the caption: "Shameful. Lydia Cumming, reporter with TV Azteca Puebla, calls for a lift to avoid getting wet.”

The story spread around the Mexican capital and within minutes the picture was trending on Twitter.

Disapproving jokers took the opportunity to use the picture in various memes mocking the reporter – one showed her being carried across the moon and another inserted her into a Star Wars scene.

Many people criticised Cumming on Twitter, with one user posting: "What a total lack of professionalism. She should be fired for this.”

Well, they got their wish. Within hours, Cumming had indeed been sacked by TV Azteca and her boss tweeted: "She was fired yesterday. I"m sorry for what happened. Her attitude is regrettable and for this we sacked her.”

The disgraced reporter has since released an apology on Twitter, saying: "I know what I did wrong and I accept the consequences. I have leaed a lesson.”
