Trek-nology comes to life

A group of physicists from London's Imperial College has announced that it has strengthened and focused terahertz radiation, or T-Rays, which, according to a press release, \"[provides] part of the functionality of a Star Trek-like tricorder, a portable sensing, computing and data communications device\" and \"could diagnose patients better than a panel of physicians.\"

Even Spock -- the Vulcan, not the doctor -- could get excited(ish) about that.

This wouldn't be the first time Trek-nology has come to life; the next time you break out a flip phone, a Bluetooth earpiece or a tablet PC, you might tip your battery toward the Starship Enterprise.

What is your favorite sci-fi invention?
