The story of Baltimore's Poe Toaster sounds less like gothic literature and more like a Craigslist missed connection: "You had an overcoat, a scarf and a wide-brimmed hat. I was the dead author whose grave you used to visit. Tell me what brand of Cognac you left on my tombstone and I'll know it's you."

Every year, the Toaster brought Edgar Allan Poe a birthday gift of booze and roses, but he's been a no-show since 2009. If he doesn't appear tonight, the loyal Toaster-spotters will declare him "Nevermore".

The biggest mystery isn't who he is or why the tradition started; it's why he thought even a dead guy would appreciate a half-empty bottle of Hennessey.

What gift would you give your favorite author?
