Hannah Montero, a passenger caught up in the incident, told the Mirror: ‘I was on the train and honestly was frightened for my life.

‘The doors weren"t being opened, everyone was trying to smash windows, panicking and frightened."

A spokesperson for Transport for London said the smoke was believed to have been caused by the brakes being locked against the wheels of the train.

The spokesman added that the doors were not opened in case passengers climbed onto the live tracks as the train was not fully in the station.

Nigel Holness, operations director for London Underground, said: ‘Holland Park Tube station was closed from 6.40pm to 7.23pm

‘The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called as a precaution following reports of a small amount smoke under a train.

‘The Central line was held for around 15 minutes. The LFB gave the all clear and the central line resumed service at 6.54pm  and the station reopened at 7.23pm.

‘We apologise to customers for the inconvenience. Our staff worked hard to reopen the station as soon as possible and resume services."
