Teenage musician who rapped 'I made the policeman my dog' gets jailed for three months

A teenage rapper calling himself ‘Mr Crazy", whose lyrics included ‘Made the policeman my dog", was promptly arrested and jailed for three months for ‘immoral lyrics".

Othman Atiq, who raps about life in Casablanca, where youth unemployment is extremely high, was taken to court for lyrics that appeared to criticise the state police and the govement.

And the 17-year-old became the second Moroccan artist to be jailed in recent years after a court sentenced him to three months for lines in eight of his songs that were deemed ‘immoral", including:

‘In my country / you steal or you deal / a stick-up here, a dope sale there / all set up in advance / I got it worked out with the police / bought the market in my neighbourhood / made the policeman my dog."

While Mr Atiq"s defence lawyers said the lyrics were only critical of individual policemen in his neighbourhood, it was ruled that the words were directed the country"s entire force.

Rapping has become a popular medium for young people in Morocco to express their disillusionment about the high poverty, illiteracy and crime rates, but the Moroccan king has been said to want to crack down on ‘dissent" following the Arab Spring.

In 2011, rapper Mouad Belghouat was jailed for a year for a song criticising the police.
