Suspect Clifton Williams In Stun Gun Attack Arrested At Castle Rock Outlets
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Officers arrested a suspect at the Outlets at Castle Rock on Thursday moing who was wanted in connection with a violent assault on a woman in Denver in late July.
Denver police had been searching the man or men who attacked two women, in separate incidents, while they were walking alone. One woman said the man tried to choke her to death and one woman said he used a stun gun on her.
Clifton Ray Williams, 37, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and aggravated assault in the attack that happened on July 24 on South Broadway. Initial reports tied both attacks to the same man, but for right now, police are not tying Williams to the second attack.
Denver police said Williams was identified by a tip to Crime Stoppers.
Williams was arrested around 9 a.m. before the mall opened, according to Castle Rock police. He appeared to be waiting in his car, police said.
A tipster called police telling them that the man looked a lot like the suspect sketch seen on the news recently.
"The caller believed he matched the description of the subject Denver was looking for," Castle Rock police Sgt. Sam Varela said.
Police officers responded quickly, driving up to Williams, Varela said.
At first Williams started to drive away but officers pulled him over in the parking lot, ran his name and discovered Denver had a warrant out for his arrest.
Williams was arrested without incident. Varela described him as cooperative and stoic during the arrest.
"We're very happy that somebody called. A good majority of the crime we solve has been based off of citizen tips. We're glad someone called. We're very glad we had someone in the area at the time and were able to get him in custody safely," Varela said.
Police did not say if officers recovered a stun gun during Williams' arrest.
Because Denver police had a warrant for Williams, Castle Rock police officers tued the man over to the Denver officers less than an hour after the arrest, according to Kim Mutchler, manager of communications for the Town of Castle Rock.
