Gwinnett County Officer Pradeep Tamang Killed, Another Seriously Injured in Shooting Near Stone Mountain Hotel
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County Police Department officer was killed and another was critically wounded Sunday morning during a shooting at a Holiday Inn Express where the officers were responding to a reported fraud incident, authorities said.
Police Chief J.D. McClure identified the slain officer as Pradeep Tamang, 25, and said Master Police Officer David Reed remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
McClure said the officers were called to the hotel in the 1700 block of East Park Place Boulevard about 7:30 a.m. after a report that someone had fraudulently booked a room. The officers went to the room and were invited inside, authorities said.
During a conversation, the suspect, Kevin Andrews, 35, pulled a gun and opened fire, police said. The officers returned fire. Tamang died at the scene, and Reed was hit several times, authorities said. Andrews was also wounded and was being treated at a hospital for injuries described as not life-threatening.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation, which is standard in shootings involving police, authorities said. Police said Andrews had active warrants in DeKalb County and a history of convictions involving violent crimes, guns and narcotics. Charges are expected once the case is reviewed with prosecutors, authorities said.
