Gwinnett County Officer Killed, Another Seriously Injured in Shooting Near Stone Mountain Hotel
A Gwinnett County Police Department officer has died and a second officer was critically hurt after responding to a call near a Stone Mountain-area hotel early Sunday morning.
According to police, officers were sent to a fraud complaint at the Holiday Inn Express on East Park Place Boulevard at about 7:30 a.m. When they made contact with an individual at the hotel, the person opened fire. Both officers returned gunfire and struck the suspect.
One officer was pronounced dead at the scene. The second officer and the suspect were taken to a nearby hospital; the surviving officer’s condition was described as critical but stable. The current condition of the suspect has not been released.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken over the case, which is standard when officers are involved in a shooting. Authorities have not yet released details about the original fraud call or the identities of those involved.
Gwinnett County police officials have also set up a fundraiser to support the family of the fallen officer.
