TWO children are dead after an escaped snake from a nearby pet store got into their apartment.

CBC News reports Canadian police in Campbellton, New Brunswick, as saying that the snake escaped from Reptile Ocean, which is located under the family's apartment.

Media reports differed on whether the snake was a python or a boa constrictor but all said the snake was more than 13 feet long.

\"Police are investigating two sudden deaths of two young boys,\" Constable Julie Rogers-Marsh said on Monday. \"The preliminary investigation has led police to believe that a python snake escaped its enclosure in the store sometime oveight.\"

\"It is believed the two boys (aged five and seven) were strangled by the snake,\" Constable Rogers-Marsh said.

It is not clear how the snake escaped but it is now with police.

\"This is a tragedy,\" said Deputy Mayor Ian Comeau. \"The city is in shock.\"
