PEOPLE have been told to stay indoors and lock their homes with a gunman armed with two assault rifles and a knife on the loose.

The gunman 24-year-old Justin Bourque, who is dressed as John Rambo played by actor Sylvester Stallone in the popular 1980s films, has shot five Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers including a woman, in Moncton in New Brunswick, Canada.

RCMP spokesman Paul Greene confirmed the three deaths.

"Terrible sad news for Moncton. Stay indoors and allow police to do their job,” said Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc.

"There is an active shooter in the Moncton area. We"re asking residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors,” said RCMP Constable Rogers-Marsh, reported.

Sean Gallacher, who lives near the area where police were concentrating their search, told AP he heard what he now believes were gunshots but initially thought his daughter had dropped some toys on the floor above him.

"I was downstairs and heard a few bangs,” said Gallacher, 35.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney tweeted that he was "shocked by the tragedy” and that his thoughts and prayers were with frontline RCMP officers.

So sad for the brave RCMP officers who have fallen tonight. They did so, trying to protect the people of #Moncton. We must never forget them — Sébastien Belliveau (@Seb_Bell) June 5, 2014

Motorists were waed to avoid the Plaza Boulevard area.

Parts of Wheeler Boulevard are cordoned off and traffic on Mountain Road is backed up.

The Horizon Health Network has confirmed that the Moncton Hospital has received two patients with gunshot wounds.

The hospital is restricting visitors to those with "critically ill family members.”
