Producer says 'Girl Meets World' is 'a new show for a new generation'
"Girl Meets World," the spinoff of the 1990s sitcom "Boy Meets World," will be "a new show for a new generation," the U.S. series' executive producer said.
The Disney Channel announced Monday it has ordered the series and plans to air it next year.
Former "Boy Meets World" child stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel will reprise their roles of Cory and Topanga, who are now the parents of a 12-year-old daughter, played by Rowan Blanchard. "Sofia the First" actress Sabrina Carpenter will play the girl's best friend, ABC News said.
"'Girl Meets World' is a new show for a new generation that will be rooted in the same kind of honest, comedic storytelling about coming of age and the importance of family and friendship that made 'Boy Meets World' so popular," Michael Jacobs, a producer on both "World" sitcoms, said in a statement.
"'Boy Meets World' and its story of adolescent self-discovery resonated with an entire generation of tweens," Disney Channels Worldwide executive vice president Adam Bonnett said in a statement.
"In the same way audiences fell in love with Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence, we look forward to introducing our viewers to their daughter, Riley Matthews ... and building a memorable connection with a whole new generation of fans."
"Boy Meets World" ran for seven seasons on ABC, wrapping up in 2000.
