Prisoner hanged, survives, now to be hanged again

A DEATH row prisoner in Iran is to be hanged for a second time once he has recovered from the state's initial bungled attempt to execute him.

The 37-year-old man, who has been named as Alireza M, was meant to be executed at Bojnourd prison in north-east Iran last Wednesday.

After hanging for 12 minutes he was certified as dead and taken to the prison mortuary. But when his family went to collect the body the next day, they noticed that he was still breathing and rushed him to hospital.

The man, who was found guilty of drug offences, has now been put under armed guard at the hospital to await a second execution.

\"The verdict was the death sentence, and it will be carried out once the man gets well again,\" one of the country's judiciary officials confirmed.
