Police identify suspect Tevin McDonald in Smyrna mental health facility shooting

SMYRNA, GA (CBS46/AP) -

Police have identified a man accused of opening gunfire inside a mental health facility in suburban Atlanta.

Smya Police spokesman Louis Defense said 24-year-old Tevin McDonald argued with staff members before the shooting at the Ridgeview mental health and rehab facility in Cobb County on Wednesday afteoon.  Defense said McDonald also had an arrest warrant out of Fulton County.

Suspect caused 30-minute manhunt

Cobb County police said the man went to the facility seeking help. At some point during his evaluation, he pulled a handgun and fired shots, police said. Defense says McDonald didn't want to remain in the facility.

After about 30 minutes of searching, an officer located the man.

"That officer engaged the individual, got into a short foot chase, at which time we set up a perimeter and about 30 minutes or so later, the individual was taken into custody," said Smya Police Sgt. Louis Defense.

Police say no one was injured.

Police say McDonald ran into a nearby neighborhood, causing Griffin Middle School and King Springs Elementary to go on lockdown. He was arrested within 30 minutes.

Neighbor Karen Breglevich said officers swarmed her neighborhood as they looked for McDonald.

"The police officer was sitting there with his gun pointed at the lake in front my house, and said, 'Get back inside! Get back inside!' So of course, I did," Breglevich said. "Then we saw police car after police car driving down the road and the SWAT team. It was pretty scary."

McDonald is being held at the Cobb County Jail without bond. He is charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property, discharge of firearms on property of another and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

It's unclear if McDonald has an attoey.
