A helicopter has crashed into a crowded bar in Glasgow, with multiple injuries being reported.

Revellers at Clutha Vaults in Stockwell Street were left in shock when an aircraft hit the roof of the building, which was packed with a Friday night crowd awaiting a local band, Esperanza.

The number of injured, and whether there are any more serious casualties, is so far unknown.

Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wrote on Twitter: ‘Absolutely awful news about a helicopter crashing into the Clutha.

‘All my thoughts are with everyone involved & the emergency services."

Police, fire engines and ambulance crews were called to the venue to aid rescue efforts as the distressed crowds dispersed.

Eye-witnesses at the scene reported being told the aircraft was a police helicopter, although this is so far unconfirmed.

‘This is unbelievable. Just spent 20 minutes pulling people out the bar. Apparently a helicopter crashed on the roof," said Twitter user Wesley Shearer, who was present at the time of the crash.
