Atlanta police are investigating the shooting of a 7-year-old boy.

The child was playing outside when he was shot in the stomach at a home on Mango Circle in northwest Atlanta on Sunday night, police said.

Maj. Lane Hagin said the boy ran for help and was taken to the hospital by relatives. He was alert and breathing, police said. The child is now being treated at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Eggleston, officials told reporters.

Police told Swann another neighborhood resident was trying to shoot at two cars driving by when he shot the child.

"Apparently there was a disagreement with the occupants of the two vehicles that came down the street. When he saw those vehicles he apparently opened fire," Hagin of the Atlanta Police Department said.

Police are still searching for the gunman.
