Pet dogs turn out to be... bears
Surprise: One of the bears plays with staff from the rescue centre after being taken from its home in Yunnan

A pet owner in China was baffled when his beloved puppies grew up to be two endangered Asian black bears.

Two years ago Wang Kaiyu bought two 'puppies' from a Vietnamese man, the Daily Mail reported.

Wang had been planting banana trees along the Vietnamese border when he discovered the puppies.

He didn't seem to realise that his new pets looked different to normal dogs, even when he bathed and groomed them every day.

He said they were very well behaved and had large appetites.

Big babies: As they grew up the bears began to look less like dogs and weighed 100lbs each

However, as the animals, who lived in Southweste China with the Wang family, started eating more and more they began to grow at a great rate.

They started to look less like canines, weighing about 45 kilograms each.

They also killed and ate Wang's chickens.

The true situation dawned on Wang when he read a Public Security Bureau leaflet on endangered wild animals and spotted the Moon bear.

After speaking with his family, he decided to re-home the bears.

Last week, police picked up the two black bears from their home in Yunnan.

An animal rescue centre spokesperson said they were a male and a female and were both in good health.
