Pangolin meat found on Chinese ship after it rammed into Tubbataha Reef
Thousands of these creatures found frozen on ship that rammed reef

Talk about a double whammy. First a Chinese ship rammed into a protected coral reef in the Philippines. Then it was found to be transporting thousands of frozen pangolins — an endangered anteaterlike animal that's nearly extinct.

The toothless creature doesn't look too tasty, but its meat is a delicacy in China, and its scales are a key ingredient in potions for breast-feeding moms. Prices for the critters are sky high, but these poachers won't be reaping the benefits for slaughtering around 22,000 pounds of them.

Instead they'll be facing fines of up to $300,000 and up to 12 years in prison if they're found guilty of poaching and possession charges, as well as for damaging the gorgeous Tubbataha Reef. [Source]
