Oregon Girl Payton Bushnell Survives Swallowing 37 Magnets

A 3-year-old girl in Oregon is recovering after she swallowed 37 high-powered magnets that potentially could have killed her.

Payton Bushnell accidentally consumed more than three dozen powerful Buckyball magnets, the kind often found in desktop chotchkies, according to KPTV 12 News.

It is unclear how the girl managed to swallow the magnets.

Bushnell was initially taken to a hospital in Portland because her parents feared she had the flu. Doctors X-rayed her stomach and made the bizarre discovery.

"They saw a circle had formed in her stomach, and they thought she swallowed a bracelet," Bushnell's mother, Kelli, told KPTV 12.

The circular object tued out to be a clump of the magnets, which had snapped together inside the 3-year-old. They tore at least three holes in her lower intestines, doctors said, and another in her stomach.

"In all the research I have done, I have never seen any child swallow more than 10 magnets," Sandy Nipper, R.N., from Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel's Safety Store, told the news station.

The girl underwent emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

"It's a miracle she is doing as well as she is," Nipper said.

"If we had any idea what those magnets could have done to our daughter's intestines I would have never had them in our house," Bushnell's mom said.
