Moment Stowaways Are Released From Shipping Container
Watch harrowing moment stowaways are freed from metal coffin

This is the shocking moment 35 men, women and children were freed from a shipping container in Essex after it traveled around 3,600 miles from Afghanistan.

The desperate group was suffering from dehydration and hypothermia and one person died in the 40ft by 8ft metal container.

The Sikhs, who were fleeing from religious persecution in Afghanistan were found after they were heard screaming and banging for help on Saturday.

Harrowing footage from ITN shows the group sprawled on the ground beside the container after their ordeal.

A distraught woman can be heard wailing, while one of the group appears to be no more than ten-years-old.

An inteational homicide investigation was under way last night, Essex Police said.

‘We now understand that they are from Afghanistan and are of the Sikh faith," said Superintendent Trevor Roe.

‘We have had a good deal of help from partners within the local Sikh community in the Tilbury area to ensure that these poor people, who would have been through a horrific ordeal, are supported in terms of their religious and clothing needs."
