Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial draws thousands in Washington, D.C.
First: Designed as what King described as a stone of hope hewn from a mountain of despair, the memorial is the first to a black man on the National Mall and its parks

Thousands hailed the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday at the dedication of the civil rights hero's memorial on the National Mall.

President Obama paid tribute to King as a man who "stirred our conscience" and made the union "more perfect."

"He had faith in us. And that is why he belongs on this Mall - because he saw what we might become," Obama said. "As tough as times may be, I know we will overcome. I know there are better days ahead. I know this because of the man towering over us."
