Man, Wife Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide Near Idaho-Wyoming Border, Authorities Say

REMOTE STAR VALLEY, Wyo. — A domestic dispute near the Idaho-Wyoming border ended in a deadly murder-suicide Wednesday moing, authorities said, after a man fatally shot his wife and then himself in a remote rural area that has shaken the close-knit Star Valley community.

Christopher Moon, 43, of Afton, Idaho, called 911 just after 8 a.m. to report that he had shot his wife, 23-year-old Cassandra “Cassie” Moon, of Freedom, Wyo., and told dispatchers he planned to take his own life, according to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies, along with a SWAT team from Bonneville County and personnel from the Lincoln County (Wyo.) Sheriff’s Office and Star Valley Ambulance, responded to the scene on Jackknife Road, a sparsely populated stretch just west of the Wyoming state line.

Law enforcement located two vehicles parked along the road and briefly established contact with Moon by phone in an effort to persuade him to surrender peacefully, officials said. Moments later, deputies observed Moon shoot himself. Both he and his wife were pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.

Sheriff’s officials confirmed no one else was present during the incident and no additional injuries occurred. Investigators spent several hours collecting evidence, and the road remained closed for part of the day as the scene was processed.

Cassandra Moon, also known locally by her maiden name Cassie Clinger, was a devoted mother to three young children, ages 4, 2 and an infant, friends and family said. A GoFundMe campaign organized by a family friend has raised money to support her children and cover funeral and memorial expenses, organizers said.

Community members described the incident as a harrowing loss for the region, noting that such violent events are rare in the area known more for its quiet rural life than deadly crime.

Law enforcement has discouraged speculation and urged residents to rely on confirmed information as the investigation continues.

Anyone struggling with thoughts of self-harm or domestic violence is encouraged to reach out to local crisis resources or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
