A court in Dubai has offered hope to all men who are married to evil spirits from the netherworld – after granting a divorce to a man whose wife was under the control of a genie.

The Dubai Sharia court granted the man a divorce after her parents admitted she had been possessed by a jinn (or genie) for years – and was under the fiendish creature"s control at time of their marriage.

The main symptom of her possession by the supeatural spirit was a continued refusal to have intercourse with her husband.

His lawyer told the court,The woman and her family cheated my client. They should have been honest and clear about the fact that the wife was possessed by a jinn. He was only told about the jinn after the problem escalated. The woman does not deserve any allowance."

In Arabic mythology, Jinn are powerful spirits who walk through dimensions invisible to humans, rather than the jolly, rotund wish-granting figures familiar from Disney films.

The court"s decision was upheld by an appeals court this week, which cancelled his alimony payments to his wife, and the demonic spirit which controls her every move, totalling £6,800.

Gulf News reported that the key issue was her dishonesty about her possession by the spirit.

The jinn was unavailable for comment.
