A man accidentally shot his mother-in-law after the bullet bounced off an armadillo, say police.

Larry McElroy, 54, fired his 9mm pistol at the animal in Lee County, Georgia.

It killed the armadillo – but the bullet ricocheted off its armour, hit a fence, went through the back door of Carol Johnson’s caravan and struck her in the back.

According to a police report, McElroy was about 100 yards away from the home at the time.

The 74-year-old was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a good recovery.
