Martin Gwnne, of online comic site The Comic Guru, added: ‘It’s obviously very controversial for such a long-standing character to be killed-off – fans will not be happy.’

But incredulous readers are already debating whether Catwoman’s death is final.

‘It could all be a big scheme or a set-up,’ Mr Gwnne added.

A DC Comics insider said: ‘Batman has come back from the dead – maybe Catwoman can too.’
