Lauryn Hill released from jail after three months for tax fraud
Eight-time Grammy Award winning singer Lauryn Hill has been released from prison after serving three months for tax fraud.

LAURYN Hill's attoey says she has been released from federal prison after serving time for failing to pay taxes.

Hill left the facility in Connecticut on Friday, and her attoey Nathan Hochman says he hasn't had a chance to speak to his client yet.

Hill pleaded guilty last year to not paying taxes on more than $US1.5 million ($1.6 million) eaed from 2005 to 2007.

Hill also released a rare new track Consumerism on her Tumbler, writing "I felt the need to discuss the underlying soci-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it."

She also thanked her fans for their support and the mail she received every day while in prison.

"I have known since very young to look for the purpose and lesson in everything, including the trials....thank you for the letters of conce and well wishes that I receive in the mail every day. Although I may not be able to write everyone back, please know that they have been received, read, acknowledged, and appreciated," her message on Tumblr said.

She was sentenced in July to serve three months' jail time.

Under terms of her plea agreement, she'll spend the next three months under home confinement in New Jersey.

Hill, a former member of the Fugees and winner of multiple Grammys for her critically acclaimed 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, has said she stopped paying taxes after she dropped out of the music business to protect herself and her children, who now number six.
