Ladies chase after men in vintage Leap Year postcards
Who knew early-20th-century artists had Leap Year memes? Slate.com has rounded up a series of classic postcards dedicated to the tradition of the fairer sex proposing marriage on Feb. 29. We applaud the idea of women taking control of their own wedded destiny, no matter what day of the year, but we're disturbed to see most of the men in these depictions are fleeing from their smitten stalkers, risking the fine they had to pay if they rejected a female-initiated proposal.
Slate's samples depict the women as "fat, unattractive, and domineering -- sometimes even violent -- and the men they proposed to as scrawny, weak, and emasculated." Sounds like a comedic mismatch made in heaven to us.
Is it romantic for women to propose to men?
