JANE Lynch and her wife are ending their marriage.

The 52-year-old Glee star and her 44-year-old spouse Dr. Lara Embry have been together since 2009.

The couple no longer feel they have a future together.

"Lara and I have decided to end our marriage," Jane announced in a statement to People magazine.

"This has been a difficult decision for us as we care very deeply about one another. We ask for privacy as we deal with this family matter."

Lynch and Embry met at a fundraiser in San Francisco four years ago where the clinical psychologist was being honoured for her work.

The women wed on Memorial Day in 2010 in the state of Massachusetts, where homosexual marriage is recognised.

Under 20 friends and relatives attended the intimate nuptial ceremony.

The pair has spoken previously about their striking personality differences.

"Lara's very patient," Jane told the New York Times.

"I move fast. I'm very impulsive, and we kind of process things at a different pace. So we've both had to step up in that area. I've had to slow down, and she had to get a move on."

"We are both fascinated by emotional experience and are essentially hopeful people, but that temperamentally we express it differently," Lara added at the time.

"I tend to be more calm and reserved, and Jane is not. She's expressive and exuberant and gregarious."
