Isis ‘blows up Egyptian ship with rocket and leaves it in flames’

Isis has reportedly blown up an Egyptian navy vessel.

The ship was targeted yesterday by militants affiliated with the terrorist group, who claimed to have destroyed it with a rocket while it was anchored off the Sinai peninsula"s Mediterranean coast.

An Egyptian military spokesman confirmed the ship had caught fire after an exchange with ‘terrorists" on the shore, but there was no mention of rockets.

Spokesman brigadier general Mohammed Samir added no-one had died, but provided few other details of the incident.

There was no mention of damage caused, the type of ship or the size of the crew.

Security forces said some crew members suffered injuries and were forced to jump overboard to escape the raging fire.

The Egyptian IS affiliate, which calls itself the Sinai Province of the Islamic State, claimed on Twitter it had destroyed the vessel with a rocket.

The authenticity of the statement could not be immediately verified, but it was accompanied by photos purporting to show what appeared to be a rocket flying toward the vessel, a large explosion engulfing most of the boat and then black smoke rising up from the vessel.
