iPod Touch updated for the first time since 2012
Apple's new iPod Touch line comes with a 128GB option

Apple have updated the iPod Touch for the first time since 2012.

The update to Apple's personal music players brings a faster processor, upgraded front and back cameras, and a gold colour option.

A new 128GB option has also been introduced, the first iPod of such a size since the iPod Classic was discontinued.

The shape and weight of the iPod remains the same.

The performance upgrade is the most notable change. A 64 bit A8 CPU is packed into the new model, a huge leap over the A5 chip in the 2012 line. The M8 motion coprocessor is also included - this chip takes the strain off the main processor when tracking motion in fitness apps and the like, saving battery and increasing performance.

Faster WiFi and BlueTooth support has been added, essentially bringing the Touch up to the 2015 standard.

An upgrade to the cameras brings a burst mode to the front camera and 8 megapixels of resolution to the rear, along with slow motion 720p video at 120 frames per second.

The Touch is available in a silver and gold similar to the iPhone, iPad and MacBook colouring options. A dark blue and deep pink is also offered.

The iPod Touch is Apple's cheapest entry point to the iOS ecosystem, which is also offered on iPhones and iPads. It offers many of the apps available on the iPhone, but lacks any cellular capacity.

Both the 2012 iPod and the new model support Apple's new streaming music service Apple Music.
