Intern Dianna Hanson mauled to death by lion in California big cat sanctuary
Killed: Dianna Hanson, a 24-year-old intern whose dream job was working with big cats, was tragically killed after entering a lion's cage at a California wildlife sanctuary on Wednesday

It's rare, outside of Africa, to hear of folks being mauled to death by lions. But that's what went down at the 100-acre Cat Haven sanctuary in Dunlap, Calif., near Fresno. A female volunteer inte entered the lion enclosure on Tuesday afteoon before she was killed.

The killer cat, a four-year-old male named Couscous, had been raised at the park since he was a cub, and at this stage it's unclear what prompted the attack. Fresno County sheriffs were alerted around 12.30pm, with another call 20 minutes later informing them that the woman had died.

Couscous was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy, and authorities are still investigating why the volunteer was in the enclosure and what might have caused the lion to attack her.
