POLICE in weste Switzerland say several people have been injured when two passenger trains collided head-on.

Vaud canton police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel said rescue operations are still underway at the site on a regional line about 50 kilometres southwest of the capital, Be.

Pictures on the website of local daily 24 Heures showed the mangled wreckage of the two trains still on the tracks.

Earlier this month, 79 people were killed in a high-speed derailment in Spain.
