Horrific airborne crash obliterates car

FOR all the excitement of drag racing, the risk that comes along with the sport is immense.

Brazilian driver Sidnei Frigo discovered just how dangerous hurtling a car down a 400m track at speeds around 350km/h can be.

During a qualifying Pro Mod race at the National Hot Rod Association's Spring Nationals in Texas on Friday, the 44-year-old lost control of his Corvette, obliterating the car in a horrific crash.

Frigo veered into the centre cones before his car drifted to the left, smashing into the wall as it became airboe.

Pieces of the race car flew in all directions as it flipped through the air with the fate of the unfortunate driver left in luck's hands.

Sergio was freed from the car by emergency services, loaded onto a spinal board and airlifted to a nearby hospital in Houston.

And while the crash completely destroyed the vehicle virtually beyond repair, the driver was much more fortunate.

The Brazilian suffered only a broken left arm in a tumble that had the potential to produce an absolutely tragic outcome. He reportedly had surgery early on Sunday moing to correct the injury and is expected to make a full recovery.
