The group was posing for a photograph on the streets of Queens, New York, yesterday when Thomson suddenly charged at them that afteoon.

A police spokesman said Thomson had swung the hatchet and struck one officer in the right arm, he then swung it again and struck a second officer in the head.

The remaining two officers fired their weapons at the man, hitting him.

According to CNN, Thompson died after being shot by the very same police officers he attacked.

CNN reported that Thompson had a criminal past and had been discharged from the Navy.
