GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A man and his son were killed in a house fire in Gwinnett County, according to the county’s fire department.

The fire happened at a home on Crow Road on Wednesday moing.

Crews were called to the scene just before 8:30 a.m. after a neighbor saw flames coming from the home, Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

After searching the home, firefighters pulled out Les Cash and his 8-year-old son, Michael, Rutledge said. He said the elder Cash was dead. He was killed while attempting to extinguish the fire.

The child was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died, Rutledge said.

The child’s mother, Debbie Cash, and another child, a 5-year-old girl, were also at the home during the fire. Debbie Cash ran to a neighbor for help, but they couldn’t get back inside the house because of the flames, firefighters said.

A passing driver broke out a window air-conditioning unit, and rescued the 5-year-old, firefighters said. The girl and her mother were hospitalized for evaluation.
