GSU Officer Alliu Ogunkunle Arrested On Theft Charges
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A Georgia State University police officer faces theft charges.
Alliu Ogunkunle is accused of targeting mechanics while moonlighting as a security guard at a DeKalb County shopping center.
Channel 2 investigative reporter Aaron Diamant caught up with mechanic Lance Waddell, who was sifting through a set of borrowed tools. Waddell told Diamant he's not sure how he'll make ends meet.
"I've been struggling right now," Waddell said.
Last week, Waddell's tools, worth around $2,000, were stolen while he ran inside an Auto Zone store on Memorial Drive.
"All kinds of mechanic's tools: ratchets, wrenches, sockets, all the major tools mechanics use," Waddell recalled.
Waddell told Diamant he watched it all happen.
"I noticed the security guard putting them in his trunk," Waddell said. "He was supposed to be going on duty, but he took off.
DeKalb police arrested Ogunkunle and charged him with felony theft.
"I couldn't believe it, no, an officer of the law doing this to us," exclaimed Waddell.
After reading the police report, GA Daily News leaed Ogunkunle was moonlighting. He's also a veteran Georgia State University police officer.
"We are conceed when we have an allegation or an officer getting arrested and, certainly, arrested for a charge like that," GSU Deputy Police Chief Carlton Mullis said.
GSU suspended Ogunkunle without pay for now.
Diamant found Ogunkunle holed up at home in an upscale Snellville subdivision and asked about the tools police said he stole.
"No comment," Ogunkunle replied from behind a closed front door.
Meantime, Waddell is left wondering what he'll do now.
"I’m just glad he got caught," Waddell said. "That’s all I can say."
Ogunkunle remains suspended, without pay, while GSU police inteal affairs looks into the arrest.
Channel 2 has confirmed the DeKalb County District Attoey's Office now has the case.
