THIS is the brutal and sad moment the King of the Jungle was shot down dead.

Kenyan wildlife rangers fired at Mohawk, the stray male lion, after it escaped from Nairobi's national park.

The highly-publicized incident has left people across the world furious that rangers didn't instead use tranquilisers.

Footage shows the big cat rummaging beneath some trees before charging for its life as shots ring out.

The film cuts to the skinny lion crumpling slowly to a heap as it admits defeat.

The Kenya Wildlife Service said it had no choice but to shoot after it injured a local resident and ran wild among stunned crowds.

\"It had injured somebody,\" said Paul Udoto, communications manager for the wildlife service.

\"There was a crowd that had formed around it, so it was practically impossible to capture it the way we planned to.\"
