A teenager who was allegedly raped by two men was reportedly raped a second time after a failed attempt by police to use her as ‘bait" to catch the accused.

The 17-year-old girl was reportedly dragged into the forest and raped at knife point on July 7 by the two men after going to meet someone she met on Facebook.

She told police in Aurangabad district, India, that one of the pair even filmed the assault and threatened to blackmail her with the footage.

After the girl"s family reported the incident to the police they attempted to use her as bait to catch her alleged abusers the next day, however a ‘miscommunication" meant the police lost track of her, at which point they say she was assaulted again.

Vishwas Patil, Inspector General of Police, said: ‘The girl was put through the injustice again. It is wrong to use a victim, especially a minor victim, as bait."

The alleged rapist were arrested a few hours later at a nearby train station, however the police are now facing heavy criticism for their actions.

Vinod Ejjapwar, the officer who reportedly led the operation in which the teenager was used a bait, has been suspended and will now be the subject of an inquiry.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis from the Indian govement said: ‘The facts of the case are different. The Superintendent of Police will clarify soon."
