Giant African snails send Florida into shell shock
Escargot, anyone? In something out of a '50s sci-fi flick, Miami-Dade County residents are slugging it out with giant African snails that have been slithering onto shores at an alarming pace since September -- 35,000 and counting.
The Florida Department of Agriculture has the unenviable task of figuring out why the non-native mollusks have decided to forge their mucus-filled paths over Florida's landscape, feasting on the calcium-rich stucco that's a popular material in Sunbelt State houses and freaking out home gardeners who just want to trim their palm fronds in peace.
Solving this ew-inducing epidemic may be moving at a snail's pace, but who knows -- maybe some Southe entrepreneur will manage to make cosmetic gold out of goo.
Are the snails repulsive or fascinating?
