German workmen 'accidentally' lay bricks in shape of swastika
Shoppers in Goslar, Lower Saxony called police after spotting the swastika in the newly fitted walkway, but builders claim it was an accident

A group of German workmen claimed they made a dreadful error after ‘randomly" installing a set of bricks on a pathway in the shape of a swastika.

The Nazi symbol was spotted by members of the public who had visited a new shopping area in Goslar, in Lower Saxony.

They had immediately notified the police as the notorious sign is illegal in Germany and can result in jail sentences.

When the authorities arrived they confirmed it was a swastika but were not sure whether it was put there on purpose.

City council officials immediately ordered the builders to correct their mistake.

‘We do not tolerate such behaviour here," said spokesman for the city council Christian Burgart.

‘It is inexcusable, therefore we ordered it to be removed straight away."

Police said they were still investigating.
