Georgia Republicans Make Immigration a Major Issue at Capitol in 2011
ATLANTA - Georgia Republicans are fixing to make illegal immigration a major issue during the upcoming legislative session.
They'll have an ally in incoming GOP goveor Nathan Deal, who made tough anti-illegal immigration measures a centerpiece of his time in Congress.
A committee of 14 Republican lawmakers was formed in September to study illegal immigration.
There's already been talk about Georgia adopting a law similar to Arizona's crackdown, which gave local law enforcement expanded powers. But the committee's co-chairman, state Rep. Matt Ramsey said Georgia lawmakers won't just cut and paste Arizona's law.
He said a Georgia bill could incorporate things other states have done as well.
