Former school bus driver, church volunteer Charles May arrested for sex abuse
Cherokee County deputies arrested a local former school bus driver and church youth volunteer accused of sexually assaulting and exploiting a disabled person.
Officers arrested Charles Randy May, 60, Friday. Authorities believe the abuse happened several times over a year-long period. May is in jail without bond. He faces several charges, including aggravated sexual battery, sexual battery, aggravated sodomy and exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult.
Lt. Jay Baker told reporters that May has been under investigation since September.
”Anytime we have a case like this it is certainly troubling, Baker said. ”...the victim and suspect were acquaintances. They were not related.
Baker added the abuse happened at several locations including May's house in Canton. And for the last two years, May has served as a volunteer leader for a children's ministry at New Victoria Baptist Church in Woodstock.
The church's pastor John Harris said he heard about the allegations late last year and removed May from the position.
”The first reaction just saddens your heart, Harris said.
Harris added that May underwent background checks.
”Mr. May was never in a situation where he was alone with any child here. Our heart breaks for the victim and their family as well as for the family of the accused, Harris said.
