Fitchburg Woman Angelina Mendez Stole From Anti-Poverty Group
FITCHBURG, Mass. - A former employee of a central Massachusetts anti-poverty agency has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $85,000 from the organization.
Angelina Mendez, of Fitchburg ,was sentenced to four years of probation in Fitchburg District Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to stealing the money from the Montachusett Opportunity Council. The 33-year-old woman was also ordered to pay nearly $18,000 in restitution. She faces two years behind bars if she violates terms of her probation.
Her attoey said Mendez is sorry for her "malicious behavior."
The Sentinel and Enterprise reports that Mendez currently works for the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority, but has no access to agency money.
A state audit of the council last year found that the money was missing from the Child Care and Head Start programs.
