GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- The former treasurer of a Gwinnett County elementary school PTA is accused of stealing thousands from the organization.

The suspect, 40-year-old Michelle Filbey, worked at R.D. Elementary in Lilbu. She was charged with second-degree forgery and theft by conversion. School officials said she stole about $5,000.

”Some of it had to do with checks that were not deposited, checks that were written without appropriate authorization, said Gwinnett Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach.

Filbey was arrested late last month and released on $10,000 bond Friday. Her husband said the family will have to pay the price for her crime.

”She’s our wife and mother, and we’re trying to do the best we can to get through this as a family, her husband told Channel 2’s Eric Philips.

Parents and school leaders said they were disappointed.

”It’s not money that you’re taking from some anonymous organization. You’re taking it from your PTA, which is supporting your school and your students, Roach said.

Filbey is due in court Thursday to face the felony charges.
