Eight people dead after monster truck stunt goes wrong

Eight people have died and dozens are seriously injured after a monster truck flew out of control at an air show and ploughed into the watching audience.

The truck was bounding over a pile of cars during the Extreme Aeroshow in Mexico on Saturday when the driver was unable to stop accelerating.

Carlos Gonzalez, from the city of Chihuahua state prosecutors" office, said that the accident could have been caused by a mechanical failure.

At least one child is said to be among the victims.

Witnesses claim that the driver appeared to have hit his head during the stunt before his ‘helmet flew off".

‘The driver hit his head and his helmet flew off. The truck came directly at where we were," said 18-year-old spectator Daniel Dominguez.

Forty-six people remained in hospital on Sunday moing, with the local hospital making an appeal for blood donations.

The stunt truck reportedly crashed into the stands after losing control at about 7pm local time.

About 3,500 people attended that specific demonstration as part of the annual Extreme Aeroshow in the northe city of Chihuahua.

It was being held in El Rejon park, which was immediately closed off following the fatal incident.
