Does this video prove that Google search results are racist?
Google has been called out as racist after a video was spread on social media showing the results of a seemingly innocent search on its popular search engine.
The video shows a man run a Google image search for 'three black teenagers” and get a string of mug shots in retu. In addition, he performs a search for 'three white teenagers” and receives a group of glossy shots of smiling teens.
The video, which was uploaded to Twitter earlier this week, has gone viral and drawn thousands of complaints that the tech giant is skewing search results. However, even the man who posted the video is aware that calling Google's search algorithm racist is blowing things out of proportion. Saying in a recent tweet 'I'm weak at y'all saying Google is racist”
Google has responded to the criticism saying 'Our image search results are a reflection of content from across the web, including the frequency with which types of images appear and the way their described online”
The spokesman continued to say that 'These results don't reflect Google's own opinions or beliefs – as a company, we strongly value a diversity of perspectives, ideas and cultures.”
