Couple says StubHub canceled $22 Hawks tickets, said they were too cheap

The Atlanta Hawks are the talk of the town, and there's no bigger fan than Brendan Murphy.

"I am really glad to see them do well," Murphy said.

Last month Brendan Murphy bought two tickets from StubHub for a pivotal game between the Hawks and the Golden State Warriors on Feb. 6.

"The Hawks had a great record. The Warriors had a great record. This is one of the games you circle on your calendar," he said.

The tickets were about $22 each.

"Our tickets were Row B of section 109. Good seats, not great seats," Brendan Murphy said. "We hung the tickets on our refrigerator."

But the Murphys would soon lea the tickets were no good.

"Two weeks before the game, out of the blue, we got an email from StubHub notifying us they were taking back our tickets," said Allison Murphy.

"The email said the tickets were listed below market value, $21.75. Comparable seating is well over $340 now," Brendan Murphy said.

"Because the tickets had gone up in value so much, they were taking them back to resell them," said Allison Murphy.

"You assume once you make that StubHub purchase you own the tickets. I found out that is not the case. 'Galling' is a good word for it," Brendan Murphy said.

After several calls to StubHub the Murphys say the company refunded their money and offered them a $150 credit. But that's not even enough for two replacement tickets to the game.

"The cheapest seat in the arena is $99.21 in the very upper coer. I used to use StubHub a lot, I'm going to try hard to find something else to use," Brendan Murphy said.

StubHub released the following statement:

In our records, we show that the seller was unable to fulfill the tickets, so what we usually do is we refund the money and/or provide substitute tickets at comparable price/location.

Sometimes, sellers list tickets incorrectly; sometimes they list tickets they don't have, but we protect all customers with our Fan Protect Guarantee, which is a full money-back guarantee and/or seats in a comparable price/location if for any reason sellers are unable to fulfill the ticket request. It's rare, but it does happen.

In this customer's case, because there was nothing available at the same price and in the same location, we provided a full refund, plus a credit of $150 towards a future order.
