Cancer survivor, 11, catches fire in hospital bed

Doctors are treating an 11-year-old girl after she caught fire in her hospital bed.  It happened Feb. 2 at Doebecher Children's Hospital.  It is a story our news partner the Oregonian first reported.

Ireland Lane was in the hospital after falling and hitting her head at her Klamath Falls home.  She was reportedly making crafts for the nurses when she ran into the hallway engulfed in flames.

"I got a call from Ireland's grandma saying there was an accident at the hospital and Ireland caught on fire," said Ireland's mother.

Ireland's father, who was asleep in the room at the time, ran into the hallway and jumped on his daughter to smother the flames and put out the fire.  The state fire marshal is investigating.  The cause is unknown, but it is believed that static electricity and hand sanitizer may be to blame.

"That this would happen anywhere, much less our hospital, was just awful," said Stacy Nicholson, M.D. of Doebecher Children's Hospital.  "Our hearts go out to the child and her family."

Nicholson says what happened is unusual.  He says the hospital plans to make changes if investigators determine the hospital is at fault. 

In the meantime, Ireland has a long recovery ahead.  She suffered third degree bus to 18% of her body.  Doctors at Legacy Emanuel Bu Center are treating her.  Ireland's mom is confident that she will be okay.
