BBC faces criticism for describing Nelson Mandela as black
The BBC has been criticized for describing ailing leader Nelson Mandela as \"black.\" In an article about Mandela's health issues, the news outlet wrote that the 94-year-old was \"South Africa's first black president.\" This didn't go over well with Indian joualist M.S. Prabhakara. \"It is disgusting but not surprising that the BBC … should consistently describe Nelson Mandela as [black] instead of more accurately and more relevantly in political terms as South Africa's first democratically elected president.\"
The BBC has not responded but The Guardian's commenters don't share Prabhakara's outrage. \"It's right to say he was the first black president,\" one wrote. \"Apartheid was about racial segregation. His skin color is significant as much as his politics.\" [Source]
