THE BBC has apologised after accidentally broadcasting a photo of Prince William with a penis drawn on his head.

The mistake occurred when a BBC moing TV show broadcast a promo clip for comedy quartet Barbershopera.

During the clip for their song I Could Have Married Kate, the offending image flashed on screen for a few seconds, The Guardian reports.

The BBC swiftly apologised for the gaffe, which was spotted and tweeted about by surprised viewers.

\"This image was shown fleetingly within a comedy promotional video for Barbershopera, a humorous barbershop group, who were appearing later on in the program,\" said a BBC spokesperson.

The clip seems to have slipped past editors of the breakfast show. The image, which shows a photo of William with a doodled penis sprouting from his head, also shows the Duke of Cambridge wearing drawn-on glasses, goatee and missing a few front teeth.
