A zoo has said a baby giraffe that died this week committed suicide.

The infant giraffe died on Wednesday after apparently crashing into an iron enclosure fence.

Officials at Giza Zoo in Egypt said the giraffe had killed itself amid provocation from visitors.

According to a translation provided by the Egypt Independent, vets tried to rescue the three-year-old but it was declared dead.

Other reports claim that the animal in fact died from suffocation after getting trapped against the metal roof of its shade structure.

With a report into the death expected in the next few days, charity the Compassion for Animals Organisation said zoo officials" negligence was ultimately to blame.
