Atlanta Hawks Player Arrested Before Game

ATLANTA -- An Atlanta Hawks player was arrested after police said he blocked the path of an emergency vehicle and refused to get out of the way.

Reserve forward Josh Powell was arrested outside Philips Arena on Saturday at about 4:30 p.m. just before the game.

Police said Powell was defiant when instructed by an officer to move his car.

Officers said Powell blocked the path of an ambulance and resisted arrest.

”I wanted everyone to get out of the way of the ambulance when it was on the way, said fan Larry Baker. ”I think that’s just a horrible thing because you’ve got to be kind of compassionate to those who are in danger or hurt.

”I wouldn’t say it demoralizes you, but you know, to stick out in front of the city for other cities to see what you’re doing? You like people of good character to be here, said fan Sarah Franklin.

Police said the incident happened at Marietta Street and Park Avenue West near Philips Arena. An ambulance, with its emergency sirens on, was trying to get through the intersection, but Powell refused to yield while attempting to tu left, police said.

Officials said an officer directing traffic told Powell several times to go straight through so the ambulance could pass. Then, police said several officers had to force him out of his car and arrest him.

”I couldn’t see why people wouldn’t get out of the way or get out of the car when they’re asked to. So absolutely, I am surprised that he didn’t get out of the car, said Franklin.

The Riverside High School graduate faces charges of obstruction and blocking an emergency vehicle.

”If he did do it, he should face the consequences. It shouldn’t matter how much money you have, said fan Geneva Peterson.

A Hawks official released a statement Saturday night that said, ”We are aware of a traffic situation involving Josh Powell and have been alerted to the charges. At this time we have no further comment.
